Long Beach Roller Derby season opener was April 22, 2011. The Terminal Island Tootsies took on the 4th Street Retro Rollers. This was my first time at a roller derby match and it was AWESOME! The match took place inside the old Spruce Goose dome by the Queen Mary, now called the “Roller Dome”!.
KROQ DJs were spinning music outside of Roller Dome a long side several food trucks.
You were allowed to bring any food inside with you to the match. You could also go out and get food and come back anytime you wanted to.
When you first walked into the Roller Dome there was a cool vendor village. With everything from roller derby merch to hipster toddler clothing.
DJ Amighty Nectar was spinning during the pre game warm ups and during the game. The Hard Copy Rebels performed at halftime. The live music really got the crowd jumping.
Roller Derby is no joke. The hits I see these girls do reminded me of something I have missed ever since the Long Beach Ice Dogs went away. A full contact sporting event that gets you sitting on the edge of your seat screaming your head off for your home team! The next Roller Derby match is the 4th Street Retro Rollers vs the Bixby Rollerettes on May 13th, 2011.
